Tryouts! Where EVERYBODY Hustles!
Hamburg tryouts were mind boggling. A lot of talent, big turn out and amazing blur of different colored helmets from various other teams as well as last year Hamburg players . Hamburg was filling two teams with picks after the second night. Some players were signed the first night including myself. The Hawks will have a page on this web site as we progress as a team. From what I saw from in the crease we may well be a force in the winter season to come. Sure looks like a sweet season.
Next year 2008/2009 I'm proud to be a Hamburg Hawk! I picked the team to try for by who is coaching. A first consideration, or it should be.
Hawks have their own page on this site.

Endangered Hockey Species??
A Player's Dream Hockey Coach Coach who is there to teach the game skills and the rules, has a desire to better each and every player, sets goals for himself as well as for his team and each player, has concern for his player's personal safety, does not reward a player for less than best effort, works to instill personal pride in team and within team players, plays no favorites, plays all teammates as positions they earn, commands respect and respects his player's efforts, fluent ability to converse with youth, can both correct and compliment as well, does not reward sub-standard performance, is an example of personal pride, works with a consistent positive attitude, open to one on one concerns a player needs to discuss, works to bring up skills for each player in remedial areas, can both correct but also praises good effort, recognizes practices are more important then number of games, and carries one of everything a team member could have forgotten in his truck. AB
Sign me up! But he better yell at us when we need it. VG A Coach's Dream Player
Player who is there to earnestly learn the game, can skate very well even backwards, shows up ready to give a whole hearted practice, gives his/her best consistently at every game AND practice, always tries to do his/her best at drills, sets own high goals and improves with training, asks questions if anything is unclear, encourages and helps others, doesn't miss a game, doesn't miss a practice, has personal pride, follows direction with consistent good attitude, honest as own worst critic, respectful and considerate of others, inspires teammates in the locker room, comes to practices and games with all the proper equipment, and does not lose gear constantly in the locker room. Equipment Notes and Such You can raise the morale of your goalie by not trying to take the puck marks off his/her equipment. These marks are badges of honor. OK to wash the ones off shirts.
Product Testing I am still sticking with my Montreal as the best goalie stick basically because the weight in hand seems right for me. Until I can locate a 24 inch Montreal I will be using an RBK for a bit. I took on some growth and woke up walking taller. Found my Simmons glove doing the job. New Simmons Ultra Lite pads are broke in and ready for your best shot. Oh, Canada here I come!
Made In Canada
One step up in goalie gear Eighty miles and plus. Nice to know Don Simmons folk Are always there for us.
Don Simmon's pioneers the gear They always set the trends. For moves the joints so flexible Just like a goalie bends.
Comfortable when in the crease Adjustable, you'll see. Pucks can come like rifle shots Impervious to me.
They're using innovation to Develop goalie gear. So when I'm playing in the net I have no cause for fear.
I'm feeling mighty confident From high velocity With chest protection from the force Between the puck and me.
Designed and Made In Canada Equipment tried and true. And all your other goalie needs Don Simmons has them too.
Say Vincent sent you! Check their web site www.donsimmons.com
My Favorite Coach Last Season I have to say that would be Coach Mike Fusani. Worked with me for goalie coach on the Saint's Hockey Team. Five stars. He put a lot into my practices and planning That's real important to a goalie. He kept me working hard. Practice makes perfect and I'm a better goalie now because of our work together. Mike will be a big time coach someday. He sure has what it takes. In fact he is a Saints Coach for the 08/09 seasoon. 20 push ups for a soft practice goal is fair. Can we freeze that arrangement on into the future?
Dynamic Duo Hope to get an Arctic Burr street hockey entry in the Sabres Street Hockey Fest. If coached by Mike Fusani and Chase Brooks we hope to have a winner! They have what it takes but do we?
VG - Only Coach Mike but we did have our team!! We did not win but hold title to the highest recored shut out 30 to 0 My buddy Ian Fitzgerald was in net. I played out as a shooter!

Gripes on Stripes
Goalie interference! Refs - Can you spell or smell it? If all, or at least 4 of the opposing players dive on the goalie, and run him until the net slides, and everyone including the puck crosses the line...is that a goal...or maybe INTERFERENCE? Oh that's right ...it's bowling!
Is it possible the proper definition of Goalie Interference is... when the goalie stops the puck?
Lazy Whistles! Nothing as silent as a late whistle. Ever come to think .... most Refs need new whistles? It seems they don't make a sound when they should or maybe sometimes the sound takes forever to get out of the whistle....I guess!
Hey Refs...teach us the game right...call by the rules. Don't get lazy skate, skate, skate!
Refs are paid for the games. LEARN it EARN it! No matter what far away rink you ref at, it's still HOCKEY and that should mean you need to get your calls right.

Vision Impaired
Prolonging of a Hockey game Adds to the fan's delight But the teams are well aware Outright win was right.
Hockey must be lost or won There is no other way. A game goes on to overtime To strip the tie away.
Beyond it goes to shoot out To pain a goalie's soul Just one comes out victorious With his ego whole.
These situations taxing And for the crowd to please. Players strive at every game Despite the referees.
|
Every game the refs decide Infractions they don't call. Players trained to play the game Expect the rules for all.
Calls are bad or never made Teams struggle through a game. Survival of the referees Can mean a claim to fame.
Always time to spare it seems For the hockey fight. The clock is not the issue here. Something isn't right.
It seems the most official test To give a referee Beyond their knowledge of the game Check if they can see.

My Advice....
First skill you need to play Hockey? Skating - especially if you are a goalie. Balance is everything. Skate well backwards and get your edges right!
Best Defense a goalie can have is the right equipment and DEFENSE on the ice! A good goalie can keep you in the game but excuse me he is only one position on a team.

One Word of Advice
Coach was quick to point out "No letter I in team. All must work together To fulfill our dream."
When I switched the letters 'round I saw a word there - me. He Said, "Each one united Is how team comes to be.
I'm looking at team once again. Word meat is plain to see. He said. "Older, when I'm traded Would that pertain to me."

| It Takes A TEAM To Win
Your goalie's not the answer You win it as a team. Although the saves that hold the game Propel the winning dream.
Your goalie when his game is on Inspires your team to fame. But shoulder pads are needed most When you load the blame.
Your goalie is a last defense If they won, where were you? Your penalties, their breakaways Make shut outs hard to do.
Your goalie always wants a win On that his team can bet But pucks that make your winning score Are not within his net!

Highest Mountain in Antarctica is Mount Vinson (not Mount Vincent) but pretty close! Right? It overlooks the Ronne Ice Shelf. On a map the Ronne looks like the biggest outdoor ice rink ever? VG
