Antarctic Sled Dog Era Over!

A Bit Cranky!
Home Stretch!

Sled dogs were commonly used in Antarctica as a mode of transportation but had to be removed by International Agreement by a certain date in time.  Their removal fell under non native species confines.  Transportation over land is now by power equipment that uses fuel.   It appears they will only return to Antarctica  ... in my fiction stories!

I have written a special short fiction selection of narrative verse "Way Up North Saskatchewan" about a clever huskie dog named Dev who has taken on his master's attibutes.  The underlying theme is "one good turn deserves another".  As the title indicates, this short story takes place in Canada, where use of these teams still prevails.  This story was written on a recent Buffalo snowed in Saturday afternoon, for students following the web site to enjoy.

Click the side bar selection "Sled Dogs" under the catagory "Short Reads" or the hot button below.

The dog teams continue to be a topic enjoyed by many and part of history.    Sled dogs will be included in the third "Goalie King" of Antarctica story also.

Antarctica Port Lockroy dog sled artifacts
Dog sleds now are a part of Antarctic History

Sleds from the eras of sled dog transportation are on display outdoors in the summer.  They are part of a historic exhibit at Port Lockroy.  The last two brave Antarctic sled dogs returned with a handler to Australia.  There they lived out the remainder of their natural lives.
